Miyoko Akiyama is a schoolgirl in love. Invited by her upperclassman Misuzu Yamai, who rattles on in a thick Kansai dialect, she joins the "Bento Club." It's a club whose one and only motto is to make delicious food, eat it, and have a good time! Yuri Komai was once the promising ace of the track and field team... was. Forced to retire because of an injury, all she can do now is watch the practice going on down on the field from her classroom window. She figured her little sister Wakana would carry the torch and keep the track team lively from now on. Or so she thought. One day, Miyoko and Yuri collide in the hallway. And through the natural course of events, Miyoko ends up bringing Yuri along to the Bento Club. What kind of youth will these girls experience as they make bento together...?! A bento-flavored coming-of-age story begins now!!
A bright, energetic girl who always seems to be hopping about despite her small frame. Her constant smile lifts the spirits of everyone around her. Surprisingly good at math. She can't cook at all, which is why she joined the Bento Club to practice.
Easygoing and looks out for others, though she has a tendency to worry. Switched from sprinting to high jump the moment she entered high school. Withdrew from a regional tournament she was favored to win due to an injury. With her injury not healing well, she said goodbye to competing and left the track team.
Started track and field because she admired her older sister. Her times aren't improving very well, which leaves her feeling inferior to her sister. Because of this, her relationship with her sister has grown awkward.
A cheerful, easygoing girl from the Kansai region. She has a strong obsession with okonomiyaki and packs a wide variety of egg-roll-sized okonomiyaki into her bento every single day. As the mood-maker of the Bento Club, she keeps the atmosphere lively at all times.
Became close with Misuzu at the entrance ceremony and joined the Bento Club together with her. The two make a great pair, with Akari playing straight man to Misuzu's jokes. In charge of calming things down whenever Misuzu stirs up the mood.
The Bento Club's faculty advisor. He absolutely loves eating, so he agreed to be the club's advisor without a second thought. Currently obsessed with making Jiro-style ramen, and since he makes soup right next to the girls' adorable bento creations, he gets a ton of complaints from the members. He doesn't drink, but has a beer belly all the same. Teaches math. His catchphrase is "A delicious meal will save the world."
The track team captain after Yuri's departure. Yuri's close friend. Blunt and cheerful by nature. Though unremarkable as an athlete herself, she's good at bringing people together, which is why she was named captain of the track team after the third-years graduated.

Every character was full of personality, and it was a story that made me want to cheer them on as I listened. I found myself thinking "I wish I'd had a youth like this," and it warmed my heart. Thinking about what kind of youth these characters, who conveyed their feelings through cooking, will go on to have after this story, makes me really excited. I bought this for Mikako Izawa, but I ended up empathizing with and getting emotionally invested in the way Wakana-chan's feelings changed between the beginning and end of the story, and the age-appropriate emotions she showed. The exchanges with her older sister were wonderful. Thank you for such a lovely work.
Mikoko, who struggles to get the boy she's interested in to notice her, and Yuri, who harbors complicated feelings about quitting the track team and about her younger sister, were both played carefully by two veteran voice actresses, and I got to savor the atmosphere of a close-knit club activity. It's something you don't usually notice because it's just there, taken for granted, but in a fleeting moment you realize how grateful you are for it. I think this is a work that makes you feel the importance of companions and friends, much like a boxed lunch made by family. That said, Yurika Kubo's voice really does suit heartbreak and tragic love, doesn't it...
This work captures a real sense of youth, as Mikoko and Yuri each carry their own feelings while cooking together with their companions. After finishing listening, I once again felt that youth includes both the things that go well and the things that don't. At the same time, I was made to feel the importance of companions with whom you can share both joy and sorrow. The Bento Club, including the advisor teacher, has a warm atmosphere regardless of seniority between upperclassmen and underclassmen, and the members are so bright and full of individuality that it made me think "if I joined a club like this, I'd probably have a fun high school life..." I'm curious about what this group will get up to from here on...! Personally, I felt that if there were recipes for the dishes the characters made in the work, it would let listeners feel the world of the work in their daily lives even after finishing it, and enjoy the work even more...? This was a clumsy review, but if you're interested, please do consider buying it...!
