Truly Terrifying Hundred Tales ASMR — A Whispered Invitation into the Deep Dark

I thought "oh nice, a lavish ASMR with the whole cast of heroines from the series lined up!" but it turned out to be a full-blown "scary story rooted in everyday life" that actually chilled me to the bone. Weren't they playing baby games with baby bottles and sleeping side-by-side with two girls in the previous installment?? Why is this one actually scary?? The series characters feel alive as ever, the distinctive word choices we know from Ouen Kien-sensei are still here, and above all, the heroines' personal horror stories are simply high quality as horror. In that sense, this is a work I especially recommend to series fans, but if you're the type who falls asleep while listening to voice works, you might want to listen to this one at a time other than right before bed.

This was a new attempt at doing ghost stories with the entire cast. Each individual story is really well made, and it's genuinely scary. I expected it to be all giggly and cutesy, but the quality is amazing. I didn't expect it to be such a full-fledged "hundred ghost stories" (hyakumonogatari) format. Because of that, I couldn't sleep until I'd listened to every single episode (lol). The cast members playing each role were also acting with real seriousness, and their acting skill was truly impressive. Well, if you listen to Panda-chan's story you'll understand what I mean, but I get why they saved it for the very end. In any case, I think it's genuinely interesting as a proper ghost story.

It's scary! Isn't that strange!? Wasn't this supposed to be one of those "eek eek, so scary~" cutesy atmospheres with the girls squealing? But who ended up squealing the most? Me. It was legitimately horror. If you've listened to other works and thought "well, it's probably a cute story after all, right?" — you're in for a surprise, just like I was. Even so, if you still want to give it a listen, please make sure to listen all the way through. All the way through.
