Set at Nekonarikan, an inn that lies in the boundary between this world and the next, where cat girls offer their service!? The cat most beloved by the "Chosen One" (the listener) may be selected as a shrine maiden and brought back to life as a human in the present world!? A love game—no, a ritual—begins among a colorful cast of cat girls… This is the world caught between life and death, where the souls of beings who could have gone to heaven after dying, but still have lingering attachment to their past lives, gather. The inn is called Nekonarikan. All manner of people—and non-people—take the form of cats here, working or not working (because, well, they're cats)… They live freely and at their own pace, yet each carries something unsettled in their hearts. And today marks the beginning of the "Kudama Festival," a celebration held once every ten years. This is the festival said to be the origin of the phrase "a cat has nine souls" (from the proverb that cats have nine lives). Its main purpose is to cleanse and purify the impurities that have accumulated at Nekonarikan, using a vessel to carry them away. The Chosen One who lives in the present world (the protagonist) is regarded as a deity, and a shrine maiden serves him in order to calm the turbulent spirit. In the end, the visitor from another world—the human—and the shrine maiden who accompanies him are sent back to the present world, carrying the impurities away with them. In short, it is a festival in which a cat girl serves the Chosen One as a shrine maiden, in hopes of being reborn into the present world once more. However, since so many of the cats deeply wish to be reborn as humans, many cat girls end up running as candidates to become the shrine maiden. As a result, over the course of the two-month preparation period, through various twists and turns, the festival has evolved into one where the cat who becomes "the one who won the most hearts"—the most beloved cat—gets to become the shrine maiden. This is an extremely famous festival in the world of the dead, and it draws enormous attention. Even heaven and hell become absorbed in the screens of the afterlife streaming sites during this time. Which cat girl will win and become the shrine maiden? At the boundary between this world and the next, a love game—no, a ritual—begins among the cat girls.
A quiet, timid girl by nature. Since coming to Nekonarikan, she has become able to honestly express her feelings. Polite and courteous, but not very good with words. She has an unusually deep consideration for others. She's especially close with Kuro Neko. She's a little proud of her beautiful hooked tail.
The little sister figure to everyone. A bit of a little devil who knows just how to act around anyone, young or old, male or female, to get spoiled. Normally she doesn't let her guard down around others, but she's honest and open with those she trusts. She likes to be pampered and gets a little jealous easily. Her relationship with Bengal Neko is like a mischievous student and her friendly teacher.
An easygoing, cheerful girl who treats everyone like a friend. Deeply compassionate toward others and respectful of their feelings. She gets along equally well with all the other cat girls, but she and Mike Neko have a relationship like best friends.
A gentle, easygoing older-sister type. Laid-back and warmly accepting. Soft-spoken and an absolute expert when it comes to giving comfort. She doesn't interact much with the other cats, but in truth she's the most considerate of them all. Chinchilla Neko is the only one she can be truly honest with.
A blunt, straightforward older-sister type. Her emotions show clearly on her face, and glimpses of her genuinely cute nature peek through now and then. A bit clumsy by nature. Along with Chinchilla Neko, she serves as an instructor for the younger cat girls. She's especially close with Shiro, in a relationship like a mischievous student and her friendly teacher.
Innocent and carefree, yet sharp-minded. A fluffy, adorable cat. She has a habit of speaking in broken, halting Japanese like a returnee from abroad, but she drops that when discussing serious matters. She doesn't show her feelings much on the outside, but in truth she's a lonely soul who craves affection. She gets along well with Shiro Neko.
The young proprietress who runs Nekonarikan. She wishes for the happiness of the cat girls from the bottom of her heart. She loves soaking alone in the catnip hot spring. She carries many secrets that have yet to be revealed. She often finds herself at odds with American Shorthair Neko.

This is the one where you can get the whole first installment of the Neko Gurashi series in one bundle. The sound quality felt like it still had room for improvement, but the whispering itself was really lovely, and I slept very, very well. This particular work still doesn't have the greatest sound quality, and the distortion when air hits the mic during things like blowing sounds was a bit noticeable, but overall the quality is decent enough, and I'm looking forward to further improvements going forward.
Early in the winter sale, I bought the Neko Gurashi 3-work complete set featuring a voice actor I like. I couldn't believe a work with such a gorgeous lineup of voice actors was on sale, so I just barely managed to grab the first complete set in time. It's not the kind of realistic ASMR some people are used to, so it might not be for everyone, but if you're looking for healing, Neko Gurashi is a really wonderful work. I find myself drifting off to sleep wishing I could go to a world like that, and since I'm the type who can focus better while listening to music, I even listen to it while working overtime (lol).
