This can be said about nearly all of this circle's works, but this one too has a fairly poignant feel to it. This is an "if" story, so of course it doesn't continue the original plot, meaning you can enjoy it even without having listened to the original work. You get to enjoy the unique conversations between the heroine and a protagonist in a somewhat unusual situation, and I think the song the heroine sings is a great point too.
The character is a shinigami (death god), and since she's holding a big scythe on the cover art, you might get the impression of some evil final boss type, but that's not the case at all. If you listen to the sample voice you'll understand, but Re:sound's creative theme is "a girl who lacks confidence in herself," so as usual she has a weak, timid personality (both the character and the voice actress are the same as in the previous work, "Song of the White Shinigami's Forest"). But even while feeling that weakness, the way she notices the protagonist's situation felt like a very shinigami-like sensibility to me. Also, the song near the end, "Peridot Who Sings of Reincarnation," matched the work very well, though it would have been even better with vocals.
It's really hard to talk about without spoilers. For now, I just want people to listen to the sample. If the voice quality and personality match your taste, there's no need to hesitate—this is a work you should buy. Listening to it when your heart is tired gives a remarkably high relaxing effect. "Peridot Who Sings of Reincarnation"—by the time you hear this, you get a feeling like watching the ending credits roll after seeing a big-budget movie; you find yourself mulling over the story and returning to that indescribable feeling of "ahh..." The last track, Elena, is like a C-part or interlude scene you'd see after the credits in a theater. It made me go "oh...!" It's part of a series, but the story stands on its own, so I think you can enjoy it even by itself.
