This situation is, without question, hopeless — there's no real prospect of things getting better. But when I think about the "what if" — what if she had died before ever meeting him — I can't help but feel that even facing death together like this, right now, is the happier outcome.

Even in such a desperate situation, the two of them being warm and affectionate together was just lovely. Even cast aside by society like this, I think they must be happy simply because they get to share the same circumstances together.
